A role (with respect to documents) is a subscription-specific label that can be assigned to contacts in order to represent the parties to a document.

Built-In Roles

Some roles are defined by the system and carry a special meaning:

  • Author¹ - Author contact. Defaults to the current member when generating documents.
  • From¹ - Sender contact. Populated from metadata where possible. Defaults to the current member when generating documents.
  • To - Recipient/addressee contacts. Populated from metadata where possible. Defaults to the matter liaison, primary client or current contact when generating documents.
  • CC - Carbon copy recipients (visible to all recipients). Populated from metadata where possible. Defaults to the secondary clients when generating documents.
  • BCC - Blind carbon copy recipients (not visible to other recipients). Populated from metadata where possible.

¹ The From role is typically used for correspondence, while the Author role is typically used for other types of documents.
